Vibrissae are important tactile organs in the mouse. In addition to the typical structures of a hair follicle, vibrissa follicles contain a characteristic blood sinus (ring sinus) and sensory nerves.
The 4X and 10X micrographs show an overview of multiple vibrissa follicles in a transversal cross section of the mouse muzzle. The 20X and 40X micrographs depict a cross section of the upper third portion of the vibrissa follicle, showing hair follicle structures (hair shaft, glassy membrane, root sheath) and a ring sinus, a characteristic blood sinus with a dense connective tissue capsule. Another characteristic of the vibrissa, the sensory nerves, is visible in the 10X and 20X micrographs.
